IIW2007

I just watched the LunchMeet clip of Kaliya Hamlin and Phil Windley at the Internet Identity Workshop and I am impressed. I remember the first IIW Workshop back in 2005 where I accompanied Phil to help out with the workshop. I had the opportunity to attend a second time in 2006 as well which I had a chance to participate more thanks to the volunteers at the Computer History Museum.

From the sounds of things the workshop is growing. I remember the first workshop and was a little surprised at how people were very protective and critical of any idea that was not their own. There were also maybe half the number of people as there were at this weeks workshop. When I attended the second workshop in 2006 I surprised at how things were starting to change. People really started to talk and be receptive to others ideas. Kaliya and Phil both talked in the clip about how people are putting their ideas together and seeing “what kind of soup they can make”. I think the progress the workshop is making is amazing.

Now that I have moved on into full time employment and no longer work as closely with Phil as I once did I wasn’t able to attend the last two workshops but I like to keep an eye on what is going on and hope that at some point I will be able to attend the workshops again (crossing fingers). For anyone who is interested in identity I would highly recommend going to this workshop. It is an interesting experience and the great thing is that everyone has a say. If you have something you want to present then you can present. If you have ideas on other identity topics you are free to discuss. Another reason to go is because it is held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA. It is a great venue for the event in my opinion.

Hey Phil, when are you going to hold IIW here in Utah so I can avoid airfare?

Update
For those who are interested Kaliya posted a comment with the dates of the next IIWs.

Since you invited everyone to come to the next workshop…#5 will be December 3-5 2007 and #6 will be will be May 12-15 2008. We hope you can join us.

Internet Identity Workshop 2006

It looks like I’ll be going to IIW 2006 Part A with Phil Windley in a week and half. He approached me yesterday about coming and doing the running around for the workshop. I don’t mind the running around, it’s a small price to pay to hear what people have to say.

The great thing is that it is being held at the Computer History Museum. That should be fun. If you haven’t registered to come head over to the registration page and sign up now.

Open Source Friendly InfoCard

For anyone who follows Kim Cameron’s Identity Weblog you will see that he has made it possible to login to his blog using InfoCard. His blog runs WordPress which is written by PHP. You can find his announcement post here. Although the InfoCard hasn’t been active for very long the first attacker has already appeared in his subscribers list. Kim mentions how this first attack is not a bad thing.

I’ve been following the InfoCard technology with some communication with Kim Cameron and Mike Jones. I didn’t think I would be that interested in Identity when I started working for Phil Windley. However, as I’ve watched InfoCard and by attending the Internet Identity Workshop last October I have found that I have a bigger interest in identity than I thought. Speaking of the Internet Identity Workshop (IIW), this is where I will put in a plug for IIW 2006 Part A. Don’t forget to go and register today!

IIW 2005: Winding Down

All the sessions have come to a close and now the group has gathered again for some concluding remarks. The floor has been opened up to anyone who has anything else to say in terms of what was accomplished and what people hope to continue to accomplish.

One thing that has been said is that bringing the ideas together has been a great, friendly experience. It sounds like a lot of people were able to get some additional vision on what they are already doing and some connections with people who can help further the world of Internet identity.

One of the questions that has been asked was what books would people recommend. Phil Windley has been recording the books that are being suggested and should be posting the titles on the IIW 2005 wiki in the near future.

An interesting comment was made during the closing session. Johannes Ernst mentioned that although we are here talking about identity and trust, one of two things are taking place:

  1. We do not trust each other in what each person is doing, or
  2. We really don’t know much of anything anyone here is really trying to do or is doing.

I have learned more than I’ll ever be able to remember. This conference has been an awesome experience for me. I plan on taking some of the ideas I heard these past two days and see how I can include some of these ideas in my own research. I have also lengthened my list of contacts that can help advance my research.

IIW 2005: Light Weight Authentication

I am sitting in one of the first break out sessions today and the topic is Light Weight Authentication (LWA). The current systems being discussed is SXIP, LID, and OpenID.

Chris Allen is showing the kind of service he wants to provide where LWA could be beneficial. Chris wants to be able to create an online text editor where multiple people can edit the text at the same time. He compares it to an online version of SubEthaEdit. He calls this application SynchroEdit.

Chris wants to be able to authenticate people against a list of people who are allowed to edit. The question he is posing to the group is how can he authenticate efficiently between the web server, sync server and sync client. How can this be done easily and efficiently and can LWA work? That is the question.

IIW 2005: Day Two

Today at IIW 2005 everyone got together to decide the schedule. After some information sessions where everyone got into small groups to figure out what questions they want answered today, we created a list of sessions that would be held in order to discuss the things everyone wants to discuss.

I am interested to see how this works out. I figure some great group discussions will take place or it will turn into one large chaotic “my system is better than your system” session.

You can see what kind of sessions were held you can check out the matrix created on the IIW 2005 wiki.

IIW 2005: Mike Jones

Microsoft’s Mike Jones came and presented the InfoCard which is Microsoft’s identity solution. I have been looking into InfoCard for part of my research.

InfoCard is an identity system Microsoft is building into their new Vista OS. One of the keys behind InfoCard is that a user can submit a selected InfoCard that only gives the service provider the information the user wants to give. Although some providers are going to require certain information to have an account with them.

Kim Cameron, who is also attending and works with Microsoft, mentioned that the idea of InfoCard is to allow the user to make the decisions and not let the sites push things upon the user.

Mike showed an demo of InfoCard using an Amazon demo. After showing how InfoCard was used to login into the site as well to used to make a purchase, a question was asked if the service provider would keep your information you send using an InfoCard. The answer to the questions was “we hope not.” What reasons would a service provider have to keep that data? Does a service provider need to keep my credit card number after I make a purchase? Today it seems the only need for a provider keep my credit card information is for my own convenience.

As I have been reading and looking into InfoCard I have had some questions on it’s implementation. One of my main questions is how can this fit in to non-Microsoft products? InfoCard is to be integrated into Internet Explorer and I am interested to see if there will be any help from Microsoft in providing non-IE browsers.

IIW 2005: Doc Searls

Doc Searls is currently giving his presentation titled “Identity in the Marketplace: The Rise of the Fully Empowered Customer”. He points out that a person makes exchanges with companies, has conversations with companies but a person never really has any sort of real relationship with these companies. Doc considers explains this be saying “the companies won the industrial revolution” and we have lost our identity as individuals.

Doc goes on to talk about companies providing systems that allows the individual to tell them what they want and even compete for their business. The key to this is that things are done on “my” terms. He uses car rental companies as an example where an individual can say what they are going to do and the type of features they want on the car they want to rent and then have the companies compete for that individuals business.

One of the keys to making this idea work is people need to work together and share ideas when developing identity systems. Empowering the customer is an important part of identity to put the consumer back in the driver’s seat.

IIW 2005 Begins

I am at the Internet Identity Workshop today in Berkeley. I am looking forward to the presentations of the workshop and to learn a little more about identity. I would consider myself still in the infant stage when it comes to the topic of identity. I am hoping to learn some interesting things and expand my knowledge on the topic.

I had an opportunity to have dinner with Phil Windley, Doc Searls and few other presenters and attendees of IIW 2005. It was a great experience to sit a listen to some of their ideas on identity and the web.
