Dan Olsen’s Weblog

My insights and comments on technical issues and anything else I feel like saying.

Content and Design

I used to be a huge fan of ESPN.com and I guess technically I still am. However, lately I find myself going to the Yahoo! Sports web site for sports news. Although ESPN.com has more content related to sports, Yahoo! has the design appeal. I love the look of the latest iteration of Yahoo! Sports. It is more pleasant to look at if you ask me.

I wonder how many people think like I do. You have an option between two sites that provide a lot of the same information. Do more people pick content or more people pick the design they like looking at better?

Sometimes Google Video has some funny things… and some angry things.

Google Reader Audio

So I decided I would try out the audio player in my Google Reader account. I am subscribed to KSL CougarRadio which is a sports internet radio show that is every Tuesday and Thursday that talks about BYU football. Well, I pushed play and the hosts of the show sound like chipmunks. What’s up with that. Is anyone else having similar problems with the audio player in Google Reader?

Google Talk

It finally happened. Google has entered the IM market with their new Google Talk service. I had been wondering if a Google IM application came out if I would be able to use it on my Mac. Well, since they use the Jabber protocol so I am able to use their service with iChat. Very nice.

I am glad they made it possible for Mac users to use this service since many of their services are for Windows only. I’m a fan of Google and would like to see more of the services available to more operating systems than just Windows. I do download their stuff when I’m at home on my Windows box.

“Video games made me do it…”

I have been following the story about Devin Moore who has been convicted of capital murder. Moore killed two police and a radio dispatcher by grabbing one of the officers guns. Moore claims that “Life is a video game; everybody has to die sometime.” His lawyer also claims that Grand Theft Auto made him kill. Do I believe a video made him kill? No. Do I think Moore has some psychological issues? Yes! I find it ridiculous how often we see people blaming anything but themselves for their actions.

Another thing I find odd is that we do not allow killing and stealing in society but in society we have so many games that makes these crimes the main purpose of the game. This seems a little strange to me. Why are we allowing games that promote illegal activity to begin with. When I play video games I prefer the sports games. I don’t need to play a game where the goal is to run around and kill and steal. Plus, having two young boys who like to watch me play game now and again, I don’t want to expose them to violence. What am I supposed to tell them, “it’s okay to kill as long as it is a video game.”

All in all, I think video game companies should focus more on wholesome games rather than games that promote killing and stealing.

Blu-Ray chooses antipiracy plan

Blu-Ray chooses antipiracy plan | CNET News.com:

The Blu-Ray Disc Association, which is developing one of two rival high-definition, high-capacity next-generation DVD formats, has formally announced its copy-protection plans. The new discs will use the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) being developed by a consortium of studios and technology companies, the group said Tuesday. AACS is also being used by HD DVD, the rival disc format.

Blu-Ray is also adding an extra identification layer on its discs that will guard against mass production piracy.

Multitasking Monitor

A multitasking monitor? Are you serious?

A new TV monitor from Sharp could soon end a common source of household strife–choosing a channel. But it may mean sitting at the opposite end of the couch from your honey.

Sharp says the technology, which it calls “two-way viewing-angle LCD,” is useful for a number of things. For instance, one person could watch a TV program while another surfs the Web with the same monitor. In a car, the monitor might display a map for the driver while playing a movie for passengers.

I wonder how well this will work out. I am assuming if two people are going to watch two different things they will have to used headphones to get the sound right. Very interesting.

The Media and the Terror Attacks

A blog called onegoodmove has a clip from The Daily Show with John Stuart which points out how the media can have a big effect on the way people think or perceive what is going on in the world.
